When paid placements appear, label the placement clearly, such as “Advertisement” or “Paid sponsorship,” where readers see it. A footer link alone is not a substitute for a clear disclosure beside the relevant promotion.
Suggested language, only when accurate
- Paid sponsorship: “Advertisement: [advertiser] paid for this placement.”
- Affiliate link: “We may earn a commission if you buy through this link.” Use wording that matches the actual compensation trigger.
- Paid referral: “We may be paid if you sign up through this link.”
Financial promotions
If the publication covers investments, general news is not personalized investment advice. Investing can result in loss. Paid securities promotions require specialist legal review for compensation, conflicts, holdings, and any securities-law disclosures. A generic affiliate or “not advice” disclaimer is not sufficient.
